Garden Grabbing
Amendments have been made by the new Coalition Government to PPS3 to reclassify garden land as Greenfield, as opposed to its previous classification of Brownfield. This follows longstanding objections to apparent “garden-grabbing” and building of new houses on large garden plots. At first glance the change will be welcomed by those opposed to this form of backland and tandem development, however, given that the majority of gardens are usually within the built up area of towns and villages, there is still likely to be a presumption in favour of development, subject to the normal planning considerations. As such, the only real change will be to the annual Government statistics on where new housing has been built! More to follow in our forthcoming Newsletter.
